Cockroach control at home: a practical prevention checklist
Where to look for cockroaches at home, how to remove the food, water and hiding places they rely on, and when monitoring suggests an inspection.

Seeing a cockroach is a reason to inspect, not a reason to spray every surface. A useful first response is to find where activity is happening, remove food and water sources, and monitor whether the problem continues. These steps support control, but they do not guarantee that an established infestation will disappear.
Start with the places that provide food and moisture
Use a torch to inspect beneath the sink, around the refrigerator, behind accessible appliances and inside cupboard corners. Do not move heavy appliances alone or reach into electrical equipment. Look for insects, droppings and hiding gaps; University of California IPM guidance describes kitchens and warm, moist areas as typical cockroach locations. Make a simple note of the room and location rather than treating the whole home as one problem.
Clean crumbs and greasy residues, including accessible spaces beside cooking appliances. Put dry food in closed containers, close rubbish bins, and avoid leaving dirty dishes or pet food out overnight. Repair leaks or report them to your landlord. Dry damp surfaces where practical. Food, water and shelter are the prevention priorities described in EPA's integrated pest management guidance.
Reduce hiding places without spreading the problem
Remove unnecessary cardboard and clutter from the affected area. Check incoming boxes before storing them beside food. Seal accessible cracks around cupboards and pipe penetrations using materials appropriate to the surface. Do not block required ventilation or alter shared building services.
In an apartment, cockroaches can move between units, so persistent activity near shared pipework may need coordination with building management. Cleaning one kitchen cannot address every possible source elsewhere in a building.
Monitor first; use products only as labelled
University of California IPM guidance recommends sticky traps for monitoring cockroach populations. If using a monitoring trap, follow its instructions and place it where children and pets cannot reach it. Record its location and check it consistently. A reduction at one trap is useful information, but does not prove that the entire home is pest-free.
Only use pest-control products that are authorised for the intended use in your location. Follow the label for placement, precautions and disposal. Never mix pesticides with cleaners, apply outdoor products indoors, or scatter unlabelled powders around food preparation areas. More product is not automatically more effective. Home remedies should not be presented as a guaranteed treatment.
When an inspection is the better next step
As a practical rule of thumb rather than a fixed standard, consider help if activity continues despite prevention, appears in several rooms, or involves areas you cannot safely access. Tell the inspector where you have seen insects and which products you have already used. That information is more useful than a guess about the severity of the infestation.
